Late gardening: what to sow, what to plant?

Summer is advanced, and you would like to harvest your own vegetables? There is still time!

The summer is well underway and still offers great opportunities for gardeners who haven't planted their seeds yet. If you're a bit behind, don't worry, it's not too late to start your garden! Here are some tips.

What to sow?
Some seeds can be directly sown into the ground without needing to go through the indoor seeding phase. Vegetables like radishes, carrots, beans, cucumbers, parsnips, chicory, fennel, zucchinis, Brussels sprouts, fall cauliflowers, and squash can be sown directly into the soil. Just prepare the soil by removing weeds and lightly leveling it. Then, you can sow the seeds at the depth recommended on the package and cover them with soil. Be sure to keep the soil moist to facilitate germination.

What to plant?
Root vegetables like beets can also be planted once they have developed about five leaves. You can also plant seedlings of eggplants, tomatoes, celery, green cabbages, lettuces, leeks, and peppers.

What to harvest?

You can harvest garlic, early potatoes, spinach, carrots, shallots, and onions.

For urban gardeners

If you don't have a garden, don't worry! You can also take advantage of June to garden on your balcony. There are many edible plants that you can directly sow in containers outdoors. For leafy vegetables, you can opt for varieties such as Swiss chard, Chinese cabbage, watercress, lettuce, spinach mustard, arugula, and many others. Root vegetables like beets, radishes, and carrots can also be grown in pots. Beans, aromatic herbs (chervil, basil, sage, thyme, savory, mint, lemon balm, coriander, parsley), as well as edible flowers such as borage, nasturtiums, and pansies can also be cultivated on your balcony. If you already have vegetables sown in pots or seed trays, you can now plant them in your containers.

And the autumn garden?

Leafy vegetables: Green leafy vegetables generally grow quickly and can be harvested before the first frost. You can plant spinach, lettuces, kale, Swiss chard, lamb's lettuce, and arugula, etc.

Radishes: Radishes grow quickly and can be harvested in a few weeks. Choose varieties suitable for autumn cultivation.
Carrots: Some carrot varieties can be planted in August for an autumn harvest.
Turnips: Turnips are also good options for autumn cultivation. They are ready to be harvested in a few weeks.
Beets: Some beet varieties can be sown in August for an autumn harvest.
Zucchinis and squash: If you have a long enough growing season, you can consider planting zucchinis or squash for a late harvest.
Peas: Pea varieties suitable for autumn can be sown in August for a later harvest.
Broccoli and cauliflower: If you plant broccoli and cauliflower seedlings in August, they could be ready for harvest in autumn.
Make sure to choose varieties suitable for your region and the planting period to optimize your chances of success. Also, keep in mind that the date of the first frost in your region plays a crucial role in the success of autumn crops. If you're concerned about the remaining time before the first frost, prioritize short-cycle crops to ensure a satisfactory harvest.
